GATE 2022 EE question 44: An ideal op-amp (gain marked ∞).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An ideal op-amp (gain marked ∞). Its non-inverting (+) input is grounded. A capacitor C_f is connected from the op-amp output back to the inverting (−) input. An independent current source I_in is connected between the inverting (−) input node and ground; its arrow points downward, so it draws current I_in out of the inverting node into ground. The op-amp output is connected through a series capacitor C_c to ground; the current through C_c, flowing from the output towards ground, is labelled I_out (arrow pointing right, away from the op-amp).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The current gain is , option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Assumptions: ideal op-amp (infinite open-loop gain, zero input current, zero output resistance). Work in the Laplace (or phasor) domain, where a capacitor has impedance . The ratio asked for is the signal (AC) current gain.

  2. Virtual short: negative feedback through holds the two inputs at the same potential. The (+) input is grounded, so the (−) input is also at (virtual ground).

  3. Read the source's direction: its arrow points down, so flows from the inverting node, through the source, into ground. It draws current out of the inverting node.

  4. KCL at the inverting node: the op-amp input takes no current, so the current leaving through the source must arrive through from the output. The current in from the output to the node is , so

  5. The op-amp output is an ideal voltage source (zero output resistance), so the load does not change . The current through from the output to ground, which is the direction of the arrow, is

  6. Therefore This is a positive, frequency-independent ratio, which is option (C).

KEY IDEA

The "ideal current amplifier" is an ideal op-amp with capacitive feedback. Virtual ground at the inverting input forces all of through , which sets . The zero-resistance output then drives to ground, giving . The terms cancel, so the gain is the capacitor ratio . Its sign depends only on the reference directions drawn for and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the inverting-amplifier rule "gain " out of habit and picking a negative option, (B) or (D). The sign has to come from the arrows. The source draws out of the virtual-ground node, so comes out positive (). is defined in the same direction as the current drives through to ground, so the ratio is . Another slip is inverting the ratio to , which confuses the impedance with the admittance .
