GATE 2020 EC question 41: Inverting op-amp circuit.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Inverting op-amp circuit. Input source V_i(j ω) connects through a series resistor R to a node X. From node X to ground there are two shunt elements in parallel: a capacitor 2C and a resistor 2R. Node X connects directly to the inverting (−) input of an ideal op-amp. The non-inverting (+) input is connected to ground. The feedback network between the output and the inverting input (node X) is a resistor R in parallel with a capacitor C. The output is taken at the op-amp output terminal as V_o(j ω) with respect to ground.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The circuit is a first-order inverting low-pass filter with , so . Option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Assumption: ideal op-amp (infinite open-loop gain, infinite input impedance) with negative feedback through . Since , the virtual short holds node X (the inverting input) at , a virtual ground.

  2. The shunt elements and are connected between node X () and ground (). With no voltage across them, neither carries any current, so they have no effect on the transfer function.

  3. KCL at node X (the ideal op-amp input draws no current): the input current flows entirely through the feedback impedance

  4. Inverting-amplifier gain: This is a first-order low-pass response with DC gain magnitude .

  5. The dB point is where the magnitude falls to of its DC value, i.e. , so :

  6. This matches option (D).

KEY IDEA

In an ideal inverting amplifier the inverting input is a virtual ground, so any element connected from that node to ground has zero volts across it and carries no current. Here the and shunt drop out. The gain is set only by with , which gives a single pole at .

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating as part of the input network, for example as a voltage divider with the series or as an added pole at , and so getting a lower cut-off frequency. Those elements sit between virtual ground and real ground and carry no current. A second slip is using directly as the answer in hertz (500) instead of dividing by .
