Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single series loop. Right branch: a 10 µF capacitor, top plate marked +, bottom plate marked −, labelled V(0⁻) = 10 V. Top wire: a switch that closes at t = 0, joining the capacitor's top (+) terminal to the top of the left branch. Left branch, top to bottom: a 10 kΩ resistor, then a Zener diode labelled V_Z = 5 V. The Zener's triangle points upward with its bent (Zener) bar at the top, so the cathode connects to the resistor and the anode to the bottom wire. The bottom wire joins the Zener's anode to the capacitor's bottom (−) terminal.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The ideal Zener dissipates 0.250 mJ (250 µJ). It holds a constant 5 V while 50 µC of charge flows through it, as the capacitor discharges from 10 V down to 5 V.

Official answer: 0.250Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Direction of the discharge current. The capacitor's top plate is . When the switch closes, current leaves the plate, goes through the switch and down through the resistor, then enters the Zener at its cathode (the barred end, at the top) and leaves at its anode (bottom). So the Zener is reverse-biased.

  2. Ideal Zener model. In reverse it blocks until the voltage across it reaches . After that it holds exactly for any current. At the capacitor supplies , so the Zener breaks down and the capacitor discharges through against a constant 5 V.

  3. Current and final state (KVL around the loop). Current flows only while , so the capacitor settles at , not at 0 V. With ,

  4. Charge that passes through the Zener. All of it flows through the series loop:

  5. Zener energy = constant voltage × charge. The Zener voltage stays at the whole time, so

  6. Energy balance check. Energy released by the capacitor: . Energy lost in the resistor: . Then , which matches . Answer: 0.250 mJ.

KEY IDEA

A reverse-biased ideal Zener behaves like a constant 5 V battery that absorbs energy. The capacitor discharges only until it reaches V_Z, so the charge moved is C(10 − 5) = 50 µC. The energy into any constant-voltage element is its voltage times the charge through it: W_Z = V_Z · Q. The energy balance (375 µJ released by the capacitor = 125 µJ in R + 250 µJ in the Zener) confirms it.

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Letting the capacitor discharge fully to 0 V and giving the Zener a share of ½C·10² = 500 µJ. Once v_C falls to 5 V the current stops. (2) Giving the Zener all the capacitor's released energy, 375 µJ, and forgetting the 125 µJ lost in the resistor. (3) Reading the Zener as forward-biased: check which end the discharge current enters. It enters at the barred cathode, so the diode is in reverse breakdown.
