Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Center-tapped full-wave rectifier. On the left an AC source V_s(t) is connected across the primary winding of an n:1 transformer (iron core, two parallel lines). The secondary winding has three terminals: top, a center tap and bottom. The top terminal goes to the anode of diode D_1. The bottom terminal goes to the anode of diode D_2. Both diodes point to the right, and their cathodes join a common vertical wire on the right. The center tap connects to the left end of load resistor R_L, and the right end of R_L connects to the common cathode wire. The load voltage V_L(t) is marked with - on the left (center-tap side) and + on the right (cathode side).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (A). Each half of the secondary has peak V, and the full-wave average equals when .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Identify the circuit. The secondary has three terminals: top, a centre tap and bottom. runs from the top end and from the bottom end, and their cathodes are joined. sits between the centre tap () and the joined cathodes (). This is a centre-tapped full-wave rectifier. The figure is drawn symmetric, so the tap is taken at the midpoint of the secondary.

  2. Transformer ratio (ideal, ). The label covers the transformer as a whole, so it is the ratio of primary turns to total secondary turns. The voltage across the whole secondary is , with peak .

  3. Half-winding voltage. Each diode works with only half of the secondary, from one end to the centre tap. Let , with . Measured from the centre tap, the top end is at and the bottom end is at .

  4. Conduction. is the cathode node measured from the centre tap. With ideal diodes and as the only return path, whichever end is higher above the centre tap drives the cathode node. So . When , conducts and is reverse biased by . When , the roles swap. No dots are marked on the windings, but either winding polarity gives the same .

  5. Average of a full-wave rectified sine. The waveform repeats every in :

  6. Equate to the given value. This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

In a centre-tapped full-wave rectifier each diode uses only half of the secondary. The output peak is therefore half the full-secondary peak, , and the average load voltage is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the full-secondary peak as , as in a bridge rectifier, gives and , which is option (B). Reading as the ratio to each half-winding makes the same error. In a centre-tapped circuit only half of the secondary feeds the load at any instant.
