In the figure shown, the diode current is given by . is the diode voltage in volts, is the absolute temperature in Kelvin, , and is the saturation current. The dc current source, opamp and the resistors are ideal, and are assumed to be temperature independent. The change in the output voltage () per Kelvin change in temperature is ________ mV (rounded off to one decimal place).

Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A 250 nA dc current source hangs from V_DD and drives its current downward into a node (call it A). A diode runs from node A down to the bottom rail. The anode is at A and the cathode at the bottom rail, so the source current forward-biases it. The bottom rail is grounded. Node A also connects to the non-inverting (+) input of an op-amp powered from +V_CC and -V_EE. The op-amp output is V_out. A resistor 5R connects V_out to the inverting (-) input, and a resistor R connects the inverting (-) input to the grounded bottom rail (the diode's cathode). The circuit is a non-inverting amplifier that amplifies the diode voltage.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The output voltage rises by about 10.0 mV for every 1 K rise in temperature.

Official answer: 9.5 to 10.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Diode bias. The ideal 250 nA source forces through the diode. Its anode is at the top node and its cathode is at the grounded rail, so this current forward-biases it. The op-amp's input is tied to the anode, so it sits at .

  2. Invert the diode law. From :

  3. Op-amp stage (ideal op-amp, negative feedback, virtual short). The feedback resistor runs from to the input, and runs from the input to ground. So . This is a non-inverting amplifier:

  4. Temperature derivative. comes from an ideal source, and , and the resistor ratio are given as temperature independent. So only the explicit changes:

  5. Evaluate the logarithm:

  6. Result:

  7. Sign and sanity check. The result is positive. With held constant and a fixed current, is proportional to absolute temperature (the PTAT principle), so . At this model gives , a realistic silicon diode drop, and . The gain of 6 turns that into . The answer does not depend on which temperature is chosen.

KEY IDEA

A fixed current in a diode whose saturation current is held constant gives , which is proportional to absolute temperature. The non-inverting amplifier multiplies it by , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Using the familiar rule for a real diode. That rule comes from rising steeply with temperature, and this question fixes at a constant, so here the voltage rises with temperature. (2) Taking the gain as , the inverting-amplifier gain, when the circuit is non-inverting with gain ; this gives 8.3 mV. (3) Dropping the term or using in place of .
