Answer and solution

ANSWER

The capacitance increases by 25.0 %, option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. For a parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates, . With the plate area fixed, .

  2. The initial gap is . The gap is decreased by , so .

  3. Initial capacitance: , using .

  4. Final capacitance: .

  5. The ratio does not depend on or : .

  6. Percentage change: , an increase. This is option (C).

KEY IDEA

For a parallel plate sensor with fixed area and dielectric, . The percentage change is . The values of and cancel.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the percentage change in the gap, , as the percentage change in capacitance. Capacitance is inversely proportional to the gap, so a 20% smaller gap gives a 25% larger capacitance. Another slip is dividing by the new capacitance instead of the initial one, which gives 20%.
