GATE 2023 IN Q.51: solution and answer

GATE 2023 · INQ.51 · 2 marks · NAT

A wire-wound 'resistive potentiometer type' angle sensor with 72 turns is used in an application. The first turn of the potentiometer is connected to ground while its last turn is connected to 3.6 V. The width of the wiper covers two turns ensuring make-before-break. The output (wiper) voltage when the wiper is on top of both the turns 35 and 36 is ______ V (rounded off to two decimal places).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The wiper voltage is about 1.77 V (3.6 × 35/71 = 1.7746 V, almost halfway between 1.75 V and 1.80 V).

Official answer: 1.77 to 1.78Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Treat the winding as 72 equal turns in series across the 3.6 V supply, with the ground lead at the start of turn 1 and the 3.6 V lead at the end of turn 72. Each turn then drops

  2. When the wiper touches a single turn , there are turns between it and ground, so . This scale reads on the last turn. So and .

  3. Make-before-break means the wiper is two turns wide. On turns 35 and 36 together it touches both contact points at once, so it shorts the one turn of wire between them (turn 36). With no load on the wiper, that turn carries no current and drops out of the divider.

  4. The divider now has turns in circuit: turns (1 to 35) between the wiper and ground, and turns (37 to 72) between the wiper and the 3.6 V end.

  5. Check: sits almost exactly halfway between the single-turn readings and (their mean is ). That is the point of a two-turn wiper: it adds a half-turn step between neighbouring turns and so doubles the resolution.

  6. (rounded to two decimal places).

KEY IDEA

With N turns across V, each turn drops V/N, and the wiper on turn n alone reads nV/N. A make-before-break wiper that bridges two neighbouring turns shorts the turn between them, so it reads almost exactly halfway between the two single-turn values. This doubles the resolution.

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading the bridged position as turn 35 alone (35 × 0.05 = 1.75 V) ignores the half-turn step the two-turn wiper adds. Switching to a 71-interval scale (turn 1 at 0 V) is just as wrong. On this question's scale each of the 72 turns drops 3.6/72 = 0.05 V, and the bridged position reads about 1.775 V.
