If is the current flowing through a Hall effect sensor and is the magnetic flux density perpendicular to the direction of the current (in the plane of the Hall effect sensor), the Hall voltage generated is ____

  1. (A)

Directly proportional to and inversely proportional to

  2. (B)

    Directly proportional to both and

  3. (C)

    Inversely proportional to both and

  4. (D)

Inversely proportional to and directly proportional to

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The Hall voltage is directly proportional to both and , so the answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. A Hall element carries current along its length. A field perpendicular to the current pushes the moving carriers sideways with the Lorentz force .

  2. Charge collects on the side faces until the Hall electric field balances the magnetic force: , so .

  3. The drift velocity follows from the current: , where is the width, is the thickness and is the carrier density.

  4. The Hall voltage across the width is .

  5. This is with Hall coefficient .

  6. For a given sensor , and are fixed, so . The Hall voltage is directly proportional to both and , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

The Hall voltage is . For a fixed sensor it is linear in the bias current and in the perpendicular flux density, which is why Hall sensors measure magnetic field or current.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the Hall voltage as inversely proportional to or . The carrier density and thickness sit in the denominator, but and both sit in the numerator.
