GATE 2022 · EEQ.32 · 1 mark · NAT

A single-phase full-bridge diode rectifier feeds a resistive load of 50 Ω from a 200 V, 50 Hz single phase AC supply. If the diodes are ideal, then the active power, in watts, drawn by the load is ______. (round off to nearest integer)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The active power drawn by the load is 800 W.

Official answer: 795 to 805Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. The supply is 200 V, 50 Hz single phase (taken as the rms value, the usual convention), so . With ideal diodes and no gating, the full-bridge output is . The firing angle is (diodes conduct naturally) and there is no switching, so no duty ratio applies; the load carries current continuously.

  2. The load is purely resistive, so the active power is . It depends on the rms output voltage, not the average.

  3. The rms of the full-wave rectified sine, over one output period :

  4. Check on the average value: . Using it wrongly would give , which is not the active power. The correct value is .

KEY IDEA

Power in a resistive load depends on the rms output voltage. Full-wave rectification does not change the rms value of a sine, so the output rms equals the supply rms (200 V) and P = V_rms^2/R.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the average output voltage 2Vm/pi (about 180 V) in P = V^2/R, which gives about 648 W instead of 800 W. Average value is for dc-meter readings; power needs rms.
