Figure from the GATE 2026 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single series loop. An AC voltage source v_s = 325 sin(2π50t) V is on the left (vertical branch). From its top terminal the path goes up and right through the ideal diode D (anode toward the source, cathode toward the right, arrow pointing right), then through the inductor L = 500 µH along the top, then down through the resistor R = 10 Ω on the right, and returns along the bottom wire to the source. There is no freewheeling diode and no other element.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The peak diode current is about 32.5 A.

Official answer: 32.3 to 32.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. This is a single-phase half-wave rectifier feeding an R-L load, with no freewheeling diode. The diode is an uncontrolled (plain) diode, so the firing angle is . There is no chopping, so no duty ratio applies.

  2. Load reactance: .

  3. Load impedance: . Load angle: .

  4. While the diode conducts, with and , the current is

  5. The time constant is very small: , so . By the transient term has fallen to about . The current is therefore effectively the steady-state sinusoid .

  6. The peak occurs where , that is at . The diode is still conducting there, because conduction lasts until about . At this point .

KEY IDEA

When , the inductor barely delays the current. The diode current is essentially with a very small phase lag , so the peak is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using is fine here, but the reasoning matters: the current peaks at with . Another slip is to subtract a large transient or to treat the load as heavily inductive, which would call for the full conduction-angle analysis. Here is only 0.9 degrees.
