Figure description

A three-phase star-connected AC source (three sinusoidal sources joined at a common star point) feeds a box containing a thyristor symbol, a three-phase thyristor converter. The outer terminals of all three sources are wired to the left side of the box: one from the top source, and two from the lower left and lower right sources. The output voltage V_o is marked with + at the top and - at the bottom on the right of the box. The load across V_o is, in series from top to bottom, a 1 ohm resistor, a 100 mH inductor and a 500 V DC source.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The firing angle is , option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. The load is a resistor in series with an inductor and a DC source , with its positive side toward the terminal. So the converter must supply a voltage above for current to flow.

  2. The large inductance keeps the load current essentially constant, so and the ripple is neglected.

  3. The power in the resistor is . With , .

  4. The average voltage across the inductor is zero in steady state. Averaging KVL around the load gives .

  5. Set this equal to the given expression: , so .

  6. Then , so , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

With a large inductor the load current is nearly constant, so the resistor power gives the current. Averaging KVL around the load, where the inductor drops no average voltage, then gives the converter's average output voltage as .

WATCH OUT FOR

Forgetting the 500 V source and writing , which gives an impossible . Another slip is to treat the inductor as dropping average voltage.
