Figure description

Bridge with two legs between a top rail and a bottom rail. Left leg: T1 on top, T2 below. Right leg: D1 on top, T3 below. The source V_in = 100 sin (100 π t) V (the + terminal marked on the upper side) is connected between the midpoint of the left leg (T1/T2 junction) and the midpoint of the right leg (D1/T3 junction). A 10 A constant current source is the load between the top rail and the bottom rail, arrow pointing down. V_O is measured across it with + at the top rail.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The average output voltage is .

  1. Let be the junction of and (the source terminal) and the junction of and . Then with . The load is a constant current , so only the voltage across it changes. The top rail is fed through from or through from . The bottom rail returns through to or through to .

  2. to ( and fired at ): and conduct, so .

  3. to : goes negative, so is reverse biased and turns off, and turns on. The constant current free-wheels through and , so .

  4. From ( fired at ): takes over from , so the current path is and , which is positive for to . The load current is constant, so keeps conducting past until and are fired again at . For to the output is still , which is now negative.

  5. The average over one period is

  6. The three integrals are , and . The bracket is therefore .

KEY IDEA

With a constant-current load, a thyristor keeps conducting until the next one is fired. So work out which devices carry the current in each interval and integrate over a full cycle. The output goes negative from to , where is still on and is already positive.

WATCH OUT FOR

Stopping at , which drops the negative interval from to and gives . Another slip is to treat to as an off interval with no current path, instead of free-wheeling through and with .
