GATE 2022 EE question 31: Three branches are connected in parallel between a left vertical rail and a right vertical rail.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three branches are connected in parallel between a left vertical rail and a right vertical rail. Top branch: a 6 Ω resistor and a 3 Ω resistor in parallel with each other, the 6 Ω drawn above the 3 Ω. Their two ends join short vertical links, and horizontal wires tie those links to the outer left and right rails. Middle branch: a 1 capacitor in series with a 10 Ω resistor, capacitor on the left side and 10 Ω on the right, from the left rail to the right rail. Bottom branch: a 10 V battery at the bottom-left (negative terminal on the left, toward the left rail; positive terminal on the right), then switch S (open in the drawing, closed at t = 0), then a 2 Ω resistor running to the right rail.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The steady-state voltage across the resistor is .

Official answer: 4.95 to 5.05Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Topology. Three branches join the same two nodes, the left rail and the right rail. They are the source branch (the battery, switch and in series), the branch ( in series with ) and the resistor pair ().

  2. DC steady state. Once the switch has closed and the transient has died out, is constant, so . The capacitor behaves as an open circuit and the branch carries no current. Neither element affects the steady-state answer.

  3. Equivalent load.

  4. Series loop. The source, the resistor and now form a single loop:

  5. Voltage across the pair. Voltage division gives the same result: .

  6. Parallel elements share the same voltage, so the steady-state voltage across the resistor has magnitude .

KEY IDEA

In DC steady state a capacitor carries no current, so it acts as an open circuit. Any resistor in series with it (here the ) carries no current either, and the branch drops out. The circuit is then just the source, and in one loop, and the voltage splits equally, giving .

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting the resistor in the steady-state network. Putting it in parallel with gives and about . A second mistake is to find the current in the resistor () and report that instead of the voltage. A third is to use the initial () condition, where the uncharged capacitor acts as a short.
