Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A ladder circuit on a common bottom (ground) rail. From left to right: an independent current source of 5 A, arrow pointing up (current delivered upward into the top-left node); a 2 Ω resistor connected from that top-left node to ground (in parallel with the source); a 3 H inductor in series along the top wire from the top-left node to a second top node; a 4 Ω resistor from the second top node to ground; then a switch S, labelled t = 0 (open before t = 0, closes at t = 0), in the top wire from the second top node to a third top node; a second 4 Ω resistor from the third top node to ground.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The time constant for is .

Official answer: 0.75Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. For the switch is closed. The circuit still has only one energy-storage element, the inductor, so it is a first-order circuit with time constant . Here is the Thevenin resistance seen from the inductor's terminals.

  2. To find , switch off the independent source: the current source becomes an open circuit.

  3. Left of the inductor: with the source open, the only path from the inductor's left terminal to ground is the resistor.

  4. Right of the inductor: with S closed, the two resistors both run from the inductor's right terminal to ground, so they are in parallel: .

  5. Tracing a loop out of one inductor terminal and back into the other, the ground rail joins these two parts, so they are in series:

  6. Time constant:

  7. The initial current, (the inductor acts as a short in the old steady state with S open), fixes where the transient starts. It does not affect .

KEY IDEA

A single-inductor circuit has , where is measured at the inductor terminals with independent sources switched off, and for the circuit as it is after switching. With the current source opened, the on one side is in series with the on the other.

WATCH OUT FOR

Replacing the current source with a short circuit (it must be opened), which removes the and gives . Another mistake is using the pre-switching circuit (S open), which gives and . Some students also treat the as parallel with the right-hand resistors when it is actually in series with them around the inductor loop.
