ISRO EC 2025 question 34: A 75 V voltage source (+ terminal up) sits on the left vertical branch;Tap to open full size
Figure from the ISRO EC 2025 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A 75 V voltage source (+ terminal up) sits on the left vertical branch; its bottom terminal is the ground rail along the bottom. Its top terminal connects up to a top wire that runs right to a 6 A current source (arrow pointing left), then on to the top of the right vertical branch. A 5 ohm resistor runs from the left top node to a middle node; an 8 ohm resistor runs from the same middle node to the right top node. From the middle node a 20 ohm resistor goes down to ground, and V is marked across it (+ at the middle node, - at the ground end). The right top node has a 12 ohm resistor down to ground.

  1. (A)

    50 V

  2. (B)

    36 V

  3. (C)

    38 V

  4. (D)

    12 V

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (C).

Official answer: CSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. The left node is held at by the ideal source. Let the middle node (across the ) be at and the right node (across the ) be at .

  2. The source points left, so it carries from node to the node. KCL at (currents leaving): , that is .

  3. Multiply by : , so .

  4. KCL at the middle node (current in through equals current out through and ): .

  5. Multiply by : , so .

  6. Substitute : , so and .

  7. Check: . The current is and the current is , so holds. At the middle node, from the equals through the and .

KEY IDEA

Write KCL at the two unknown nodes. The ideal voltage source fixes the left node at , and the ideal current source simply forces out of the right node whatever the voltage across it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Getting the direction of the source wrong (it takes current out of the right node, so it adds a term to the outflow there) or treating it as in series with the and resistors; it is in a separate branch between the node and the right node.
