ISRO EC 2023 question 69: Two separate loops sharing a common bottom wire.Tap to open full size
Figure from the ISRO EC 2023 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two separate loops sharing a common bottom wire. Left loop: an independent voltage source V_s (plus terminal at top) in the left branch, and a box (load) in the right branch of that loop, with voltage V_1 marked across the box, + at the top and - at the bottom. So V_1 is directly across V_s. Right part: a dependent current source of value 2V_1 (diamond, arrow pointing downward) in the middle branch, and a load box on the far-right branch, with current I_1 marked by a downward arrow beside the right branch. The tops of the dependent source and the right load are joined by a wire, forming a loop with the common bottom wire. The left loop's top wire is not connected to the middle/right part's top wire.

  1. (A)

    -5 V

  2. (B)

    10 V

  3. (C)

    15 V

  4. (D)

    20 V

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (a).

Official answer: ASource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. The left loop contains only the source and the box, so the box voltage equals the source voltage: (the + marks of both are at the top).

  2. The dependent source and the right-hand box form a separate loop. They share only the bottom wire with the left loop, because the top wire of the left loop is not joined to the top wire of the right part. No current can flow between the two parts, so the right part is a closed loop of its own.

  3. The dependent source carries downward, and the right-hand box carries downward.

  4. Apply KCL at the top node of the right loop. Both currents leave this node downward, and no other branch is attached to it, so .

  5. Hence . With , .

  6. Therefore , which is option (a).

KEY IDEA

A circuit made of parts joined only through one common wire has no current between them. The right-hand loop therefore obeys KCL on its own, and the control voltage is fixed by alone.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating as the current supplied by the dependent source, so that and . Both and the source current point downward from the same node, so they must add to zero.
