A cylindrical rotor synchronous generator with constant real power output and constant terminal voltage is supplying 100 A current to a 0.9 lagging power factor load. An ideal reactor is now connected in parallel with the load, as a result of which the total lagging reactive power requirement of the load is twice the previous value while the real power remains unchanged. The armature current is now ________ A (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Answer and solution
ANSWER
The armature current is now .

Split the original armature current into its active and reactive parts. The terminal voltage is constant, so and :
An ideal reactor absorbs only lagging reactive power, so the real power stays the same. With and both constant, the active component does not change: .
The question says the total lagging reactive power (load plus reactor) is now twice what it was. At the same , the reactive component of current doubles too:
Add the two components in quadrature. Since , we have :
The new power factor is lagging. You do not need the machine's reactance or excitation: at a fixed terminal voltage, the generator supplies whatever and the load draws, and the excitation only settles the internal EMF needed to do that.
KEY IDEA
The terminal voltage is fixed, so the active current tracks and the reactive current tracks . The reactor leaves the active current at and doubles the lagging reactive current from to . The new armature current is these two added in quadrature.
WATCH OUT FOR
Doubling the whole current to 200 A, or doubling the angle instead of (which gives ). Another slip is adding the reactor's current to the load current by simple arithmetic instead of in quadrature. Only the reactive component doubles, and the active component stays at .
