Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Four-arm AC bridge (Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge). Label the nodes A (left), B (top middle), C (right) and D (bottom middle). Arm A-B (top left): resistor R1. Arm B-C (top right): resistor R2 in parallel with capacitor C2 (C2 drawn above R2). Arm A-D (bottom left): inductor L3 in series with resistor R3. Arm D-C (bottom right): resistor R4. A detector (circle) is connected vertically between B and D. The sine-wave generator is connected between the left node A and the right node C, through wires running below the bridge.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 14.40 to 14.60Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Identify the arms. The detector sits between B and D and the generator between A and C, so , , and .

  2. Balance condition. At balance , so . This reduces to the product of opposite arms, , that is .

  3. Write the parallel arm as an admittance: . Then

  4. Equate real and imaginary parts of : and , so . The cancels, which is the defining property of the Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge.

  5. Compute:

  6. Check: , which is positive and physically sensible, but it is not asked for. The 2 kHz frequency and the amplitude do not enter either balance equation. The frequency cancels, and the amplitude only affects how sensitive the detector is near balance.

KEY IDEA

This is a Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge. The unknown arm is opposite the parallel arm. Balance gives , so . That yields and . Both are independent of frequency, so the 2 kHz and data are distractors.

WATCH OUT FOR

Pairing the wrong arms. Using adjacent arms, for example , gives . The capacitance multiplies the two resistors that form the other pair of opposite arms, here and . A second trap is treating as in series with (Hay's bridge). That brings in and gives about . A third is quoting , the value in henry, when the answer is asked for in millihenry.
