Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A diamond-shaped Wheatstone bridge with node A at the top, B at the bottom, D on the left and C on the right. Arm AD (upper left) is R_1, arm AC (upper right) is R_2, arm DB (lower left) is R_3 and arm CB (lower right) is R_4. A 10 V DC source sits on the left, positive terminal up. Its positive terminal connects by a wire over the top to node A, and its negative terminal connects by a wire along the bottom to node B. The output V_CD is taken between two open terminals joined by wires to D and C. A series branch of a switch (marked 'Switch', closes at t = 0) and a 30.0 kΩ resistor is connected across R_1: one end goes to node A, and the other end goes to arm AD close to node D. Closing the switch therefore puts 30.0 kΩ in parallel with R_1.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The sensitivity is .

Official answer: 1.62 to 1.72Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Take node B as the reference, so node A is at . Each half of the bridge is a voltage divider. For the right half: . The switch does not touch this half, so stays the same after it closes.

  2. Switch open: , so .

  3. Switch closed: the branch is connected across arm AD, so it sits in parallel with : .

  4. Change in arm AD: .

  5. New potential at D: , so .

  6. Change in output: .

  7. The question defines sensitivity as the ratio of these actual (finite) changes:

KEY IDEA

Closing the switch puts the 30 kΩ branch in parallel with , which lowers arm AD by a finite . Only the divider potential at D changes; stays at 5 V. Work out before and after, and divide the finite change in output by the finite change in resistance, exactly as the question defines it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the small-signal derivative at . That value falls outside the key, because the change of is too large to treat as infinitesimal. The question asks for the ratio of the actual changes. Another slip is to add 30 kΩ in series with . In the figure, the switch and the 30 kΩ resistor join both ends of arm AD, so they form a parallel path.
