In which of the following bridge(s) is the balancing condition frequency-independent?
Maxwell bridge
Wien bridge
Schering bridge
Wheatstone bridge
ANSWER
(A), (C) and (D): the Maxwell, Schering and Wheatstone bridges have frequency-independent balance conditions. The Wien bridge balances at only one frequency, .
Official answer: A, C, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)
Test used: for an AC bridge with arms (where and are opposite arms), balance requires . This one complex equation gives two real conditions, one from the real parts and one from the imaginary parts. The balance is frequency-independent if ends up in neither condition, either because it never appears or because it cancels.
Maxwell (inductance–capacitance) bridge: arm 1 is , arm 2 is , arm 3 is and arm 4 is , so . Then In the imaginary-part equation appears on both sides and cancels, so the balance is frequency-independent. (The Maxwell inductance bridge, which compares with a standard inductor in series with , gives . It is also frequency-independent.)
Wien bridge: arm 1 is in series with , arm 2 is , and arms 3 and 4 are and . Balance means : Equating the real parts and the imaginary parts gives The imaginary-part condition fixes , so the bridge balances at only one frequency. It is frequency-dependent, which is why it is used to measure frequency.
Schering bridge: arm 1 is in series with , arm 2 is a lossless standard capacitor , arm 3 is and arm 4 is . Then Equating the real parts gives . In the imaginary parts cancels, leaving . Neither balance condition contains , so the balance is frequency-independent. Only the derived dissipation factor contains , and that is a quantity calculated after balance, not a balance condition.
Wheatstone bridge: all four arms are pure resistances, so the balance condition is . There is no reactance, so cannot appear. The balance is frequency-independent: it holds for DC and for any frequency.
The bridges whose balance is frequency-independent are the Maxwell, Schering and Wheatstone bridges, i.e. options (A), (C) and (D).
KEY IDEA
Write the balance condition and split it into real and imaginary parts. If cancels from both conditions (Maxwell, Schering) or never appears (Wheatstone), the balance is frequency-independent. If one condition fixes (Wien), the bridge balances at only one frequency.
WATCH OUT FOR
Marking the Schering bridge as frequency-dependent because its dissipation factor contains . is calculated after balance, while the balance conditions themselves, and , do not contain . A related slip is to treat the Maxwell bridge like Hay's bridge. Hay's bridge puts and in series in arm 4, and that makes its depend on . The Maxwell bridge uses , and cancels.
