Figure from the ISRO EC 2023 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three X-shaped figures side by side. Each X has four outer numbers (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right) in rounded end-lobes and one number at the centre where the strokes cross. First X: top-left 0, top-right 6, bottom-left 2, bottom-right 4, centre 10. Second X: top-left 6, top-right 2, bottom-left 8, bottom-right 10, centre 24. Third X: top-left 4, top-right 14, bottom-left 10, bottom-right 12, centre ?.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The missing number is , option (c).

Official answer: CSource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. Each X has four outer numbers and one centre number. Look for a rule that gives the centre from the outer four.

  2. First X: , and the centre is .

  3. Second X: , and the centre is .

  4. Both figures follow the same rule: centre (sum of the four outer numbers) .

  5. Third X: .

  6. Centre .

  7. So the missing number is , which is option (c). The values 45, 8 and 48 do not fit the rule.

KEY IDEA

In number-figure puzzles, test the simplest relation first: the sum of the outer numbers compared with the centre. Confirm that one rule fits every complete figure before applying it to the incomplete one.

WATCH OUT FOR

Trying products or pairwise sums of opposite corners and not checking that the rule works on both complete figures. Another slip is forgetting the constant and answering , which is not an option.
