Answer and solution

ANSWER

The missing pair is , option 1, which is choice (a).

Official answer: ASource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. Write each domino as , counting an empty half as . The first group is .

  2. In this group the bottom of each domino equals the top of the next one (, then ), and each domino has its top one more than its bottom. Read as a chain, the top halves go and the bottom halves go . The group counts down.

  3. The second group is . Here the bottom of each domino equals the top of the next one (, then ), and each bottom is one more than its top. The group counts up, from to .

  4. The groups therefore alternate: down, up, then down again. The third group is , with three dominoes in all, so it must be the counting-down group . It ends with the printed , as the first group does.

  5. So the missing pair is , which is option 1 (letter (a)).

  6. Check the other options. Option 2 gives : the second domino counts up, so the chain breaks. Option 3 gives : the bottom is followed by a top of , so the chain breaks. Option 4 gives , and followed by the printed it repeats and has no domino with a top of , so it does not form the counting-down group.

KEY IDEA

The three groups of dominoes alternate between counting down and counting up. The last group must count down again, so with at its end the missing dominoes are and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Seeing only the repeated and picking an option that ends in , or treating the groups as the same pattern each time instead of alternating. Choosing option 4 gives , which repeats a domino and never reaches .
