Figure from the GATE 2025 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Square PQRS with horizontal and vertical sides: P top-left, S top-right, R bottom-right, Q bottom-left, so PS is the top side and QR is the bottom side. Point L lies on the bottom side QR at about its midpoint. A tilted rectangle PLMN shares corner P with the square. Side PL runs diagonally down and to the right from P to L. Side LM runs up and to the right from L, crosses side SR, and ends at M outside the square, to the right of SR. Side MN runs up and to the left from M, passes exactly through corner S, and ends at N above the square, a little left of S. Side NP runs down and to the left from N back to P. Labels: P (top-left), S (top-right), Q (bottom-left), R (bottom-right), L (on QR), M (right, outside the square), N (top, outside the square). The figure marks no lengths.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The area of rectangle PLMN is 4 cm², which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Join to and look at . Both the rectangle and the square can be tied to the area of this one triangle.

  2. Using the rectangle: take as the base. lies on . In a rectangle , and the distance between these two lines is , because . So the height from to is , and (A triangle standing on one side of a parallelogram, with its apex on the opposite side, has half the parallelogram's area.)

  3. Using the square: take as the base. lies on , and at a distance of one side, . So the height from to is , and

  4. Setting the two expressions equal gives , so wherever sits on .

  5. Check with coordinates: put , , , and . Then . The line is (both and satisfy it), and the distance from to it is . So the area is for every . The answer is option (D).

KEY IDEA

Triangle PLS is half of the rectangle, because it stands on side PL and its apex S lies on the opposite side MN. It is also half of the square, because it stands on side PS and its apex L lies on the opposite side QR. So the rectangle and the square have the same area, 2 × 2 = 4 cm², wherever L lies on QR.

WATCH OUT FOR

Three slips are common. (1) Measuring the figure, or assuming L is exactly the midpoint of QR, and then working out PL and LM with Pythagoras. That is slow, and a rounding slip leads to 2√2 or 8. (2) Taking triangle PLS as the whole rectangle instead of half of it, which gives 2 (option B). (3) Doubling twice and getting 8 (option C). The note says the figure is only representative: the area does not depend on where L sits.
