Seven identical cylindrical chalk-sticks are fitted tightly in a cylindrical container. The figure below shows the arrangement of the chalk-sticks inside the cylinder.

Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Cross-section of the container: one large circle containing seven equal small circles. One small circle sits at the centre of the large circle. The other six are arranged in a ring around it, centred on the vertices of a regular hexagon: one directly above the centre, one directly below, two on the left (upper-left and lower-left) and two on the right (upper-right and lower-right). Each outer small circle touches the central circle, its two neighbouring small circles and the inside of the large circle. There is no shading and there are no labels.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The ratio of the occupied space to the empty space is 7/2, which is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Let each chalk-stick have radius and let the common length be . The container has the same length , so each volume is (cross-sectional area) , and cancels in any ratio. A ratio of volumes is therefore the same as a ratio of cross-sectional areas.

  2. Two equal circles of radius that touch have centres apart. Each of the six outer circles touches the central one, so every outer centre is from the centre of the container. (The six outer centres form a regular hexagon with side , so neighbouring outer circles touch each other too, which agrees with the tight fit in the figure.)

  3. Each outer circle also touches the container wall, so the wall is from the centre. The container's radius is .

  4. Container cross-section: .

  5. Occupied cross-section (7 chalk-sticks): .

  6. Empty cross-section: .

  7. Ratio of occupied space to empty space: This is option (B).

KEY IDEA

The container and the sticks have the same length, so the volume ratio equals the ratio of cross-sectional areas. In the hexagonal packing of seven equal circles, the outer centres are 2r from the middle, so the enclosing circle has radius 3r. The area is then 9 small-circle areas: 7 are filled and 2 are empty.

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering 9/2 (C) or 7/9, which is occupied to total space rather than occupied to empty space. A second slip is taking the container's radius as 2r, the distance to the outer centres, and forgetting to add the outer stick's own radius.
