Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Rhombus AFCD drawn with A at the left vertex, D at the top, C at the right and F at the bottom, so the sides are AD, DC, CF and FA. The horizontal diagonal AC and the vertical diagonal DF cross at B (label B written just below and left of the crossing). The vertical line through D and B is continued below F down to a point E, well below the rhombus (BE is visibly the longest part of that line). A straight segment joins A to E, forming a tall triangle ADE with the vertical line DE. Labels: A (left), D (top), C (right), B (at the diagonals' crossing), F (bottom vertex of the rhombus, on the vertical line just below B), E (bottom end of the vertical line). No lengths or angle marks are drawn on the figure; the measurements are given only in the text.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

BF = 3 cm, option (A), reached by the intended route (Pythagoras in right triangle DAE, then DB = DE − BE, then the rhombus diagonals bisect each other). The official key awards marks to all candidates, and the given data cannot all hold in one figure.

Official answer: marks to all candidatesSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Rhombus property: all four sides are equal, so (the rhombus is AFCD, so and are both sides). Its diagonals and bisect each other at right angles, which is why and why is the midpoint of : . The figure shows on one vertical line, with between and .

  2. Triangle is right-angled at (given ). By Pythagoras:

  3. lies between and on the same line, so

  4. The diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other, so . This is option (A).

  5. A caution about the data: they cannot all hold in one figure. The diagonals are perpendicular, so is perpendicular to and triangles and are both right-angled at . Triangle gives . But is a leg of triangle , whose hypotenuse is , so , which is less than 25. Both cannot be true. Put another way: with and , right triangle gives , and then right triangle would make , not 12. The official answer key awards marks to all candidates for this question. The route above uses the stated right angle , the rhombus side and , and gives 3, option (A).

KEY IDEA

In a rhombus all sides are equal (so AD = CD) and the diagonals bisect each other at right angles (so BF = DB). Pythagoras in right triangle DAE gives the hypotenuse DE, and subtracting BE along the same line leaves DB.

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering 6, which is the whole diagonal DF rather than half of it (BF), or 4, which is AB rather than BF. Some solvers also miss that AD = CD because both are sides of the rhombus. Separately, the data over-determine the figure and contradict each other: triangle ABE forces AB² = 44, but AB is a leg of right triangle ABD with hypotenuse AD = 5.
