Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of a cardioid on x-y axes. The horizontal axis is labelled x, with ticks at -0.5, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2. The vertical axis is labelled y, with ticks at -1.5, -1, -0.5, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5. The closed blue curve is the cardioid r = 1 + cos(theta). It has a cusp pointing inward at the origin (0, 0), its rightmost point at (2, 0), top and bottom extremes at about y = +1.3 and y = -1.3 near x = 0.75, and leftmost bulges at about x = -0.25 near y = +0.5 and y = -0.5. The curve is symmetric about the x-axis.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The magnitude of the line integral is .

Official answer: 9 to 10Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Write the line integral in component form. With :

  2. The cardioid is a simple closed curve. Its only corner is the cusp at the origin, so it is piecewise smooth. is smooth everywhere, so Green's theorem applies. With and : so

  3. Find the area in polar coordinates:

  4. Expand the integrand: . Over one full period, , and . So .

  5. So the area is .

  6. The line integral is . You can check this directly: with and , , so the integral is .

  7. Going around the curve counter-clockwise gives and going clockwise gives . The question asks for the magnitude, which is .

KEY IDEA

For , Green's theorem gives . The problem therefore reduces to the area of the cardioid , which is . The same result follows directly from .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is reporting the area instead of twice the area. The curl term is , not 1. The second most common error is forgetting the factor in the polar area formula, which gives . Other errors: dropping the term, which gives , or integrating only over to , which covers half the curve.
