Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Graph of y = h(x), horizontal axis X with ticks at -2, -1, 1, 2 and vertical axis y = h(x) with ticks at 1 and -1. The curve is piecewise linear: a horizontal segment at y = -1 for x <= -2 (drawn from about x = -3 to x = -2); a straight line rising from (-2, -1) to (-1, 0); a horizontal segment on the x-axis at y = 0 from x = -1 to x = 1; a straight line rising from (1, 0) to (2, 1); a horizontal segment at y = 1 for x >= 2 (drawn from x = 2 to about x = 3). So h(x) = -1 for x <= -2, h(x) = x + 1 for -2 <= x <= -1, h(x) = 0 for -1 <= x <= 1, h(x) = x - 1 for 1 <= x <= 2, h(x) = 1 for x >= 2.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) . Each of the three flat pieces of (at output levels ) takes an interval of that has non-zero probability, so each produces an impulse. The two sloped pieces give the continuous part .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Read the figure as a piecewise function: for , for , for , for , and for . So only takes values in .

  2. Rule: wherever is flat over an interval of with non-zero probability, all of that probability lands on one value . In the PDF of this appears as an impulse .

  3. The flat piece maps to : . This gives the term .

  4. The flat piece (the part of the graph lying on the -axis) maps to : . This gives the term .

  5. The flat piece maps to : . This gives the term .

  6. The two sloped pieces are one-to-one with slope , so they give an ordinary (continuous) density. For : and , so . For : , so . Together these make the piecewise-continuous part , which is zero outside .

  7. Collecting the terms: with , , , all non-zero. Check: . This is option (B).

KEY IDEA

When a transformation is constant at over an interval of that has non-zero probability, has a point mass at , and its PDF picks up an impulse . Where is strictly monotonic, the density is continuous: . So you get one delta for each flat level of the graph, and they sit at the output values (), not at the breakpoints.

WATCH OUT FOR

There are two traps. First, placing the impulses at the -axis breakpoints instead of at the output levels , which leads to (C) or (D). Second, overlooking that the segment lying along the -axis for is also a flat piece. It carries about 68% of the probability, so it produces the impulse at . Missing it leads to (A).
