The expected number of trials for first occurrence of a “head” in a biased coin is known to be 4. The probability of first occurrence of a “head” in the second trial is ________ (Round off to 3 decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The probability that the first head comes on the second trial is .

Official answer: 0.187 to 0.188Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Let be the probability of a head on a single toss and the probability of a tail. The tosses are independent, so the number of trials up to and including the first head has a geometric distribution:

  2. Mean of this distribution:

  3. We are told , so , and the probability of a tail is .

  4. For the first head to come on the second trial, the first toss must be a tail and the second a head:

  5. Rounded to 3 decimal places: . (The exact value sits right on the rounding boundary, which is why the official key accepts anything from to .)

KEY IDEA

"Number of trials until the first head" follows a geometric distribution with mean . From you get , and then : one tail followed by one head.

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading the "expected number of trials" as the expected number of tails before the first head. That mean is , so setting gives and , which is wrong. The question counts every trial including the one that gives the head, so the mean is . A second slip is writing or , which forgets that the first toss has to be a tail.
