ANSWER
(C) no solutions for . Row 2 of is times row 1, but the right-hand sides are and , not and , so .
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)
Write the augmented matrix:
Row reduce with :
The second row now reads , i.e. . No satisfies it. (You get the same thing by adding the two original equations: the left sides cancel and the right sides add to .)
Ranks: row 2 of is times row 1, and row 1 is non-zero, so . The reduced augmented matrix has two non-zero rows, one of them , so .
Consistency (Rouché–Capelli) theorem: has a solution if and only if . Here , so the system is inconsistent and has no solution. Answer: (C).
Option (D) can never be right for a linear system: the number of solutions is always , or infinitely many. If and were two different solutions, every point would also be a solution.
KEY IDEA
is consistent exactly when . When the coefficient rows are dependent (here ), the right-hand sides must follow the same relation (). If they do, there are infinitely many solutions. If they don't, as here (), there are none.
WATCH OUT FOR
Seeing 3 unknowns and only 2 equations and answering (B) 'infinitely many solutions' straight away. Having fewer equations than unknowns rules out a unique solution, but it does not make the system consistent. You still have to compare with . Another mistake is to check only and forget the augmented column.
