Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct options are (A) and (D): , so and .

Official answer: A, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Before expanding anything, look for proportional rows. Row 3 is , exactly twice Row 1: .

  2. Apply the row operation . Adding a multiple of one row to another changes neither the rank nor the determinant:

  3. A square matrix with a zero row has determinant 0, so and (D) is correct. Since , the rank of this matrix is less than 3, so (B) is false.

  4. is a non-trivial combination of the rows that equals the zero vector, so the rows are linearly dependent and (C) is false.

  5. Rows 1 and 2, and , are not multiples of each other. The minor confirms this, so the rank is at least 2.

  6. Combining the two bounds, , so (A) is correct. The correct options are (A) and (D).

KEY IDEA

For a square matrix, a zero determinant, rank below full, and linearly dependent rows all say the same thing. Once you spot , (D) is true and (B) and (C) are false together. To fix the rank exactly you still need one non-zero minor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Ticking (D) and stopping there, or reasoning that because the rank must be 1. A zero determinant only shows the rank is below 3. You need a non-zero minor (here ) to show the rank is exactly 2, which makes (A) correct as well.
