GATE 2024 EE Q.31: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The coefficient of in the Taylor series of about the origin is .
Official answer: 0.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)
Maclaurin series of cosine: . Only even powers of appear.
Maclaurin series of the exponential with : . Again only even powers appear.
Both series converge for every , so we can add them term by term:
Parity check: and , so . is an even function, so every odd-power coefficient in its Taylor series about is zero.
So the coefficient of is , which is to 1 decimal place.
KEY IDEA
and are both even functions of , so their Maclaurin series contain only even powers. The coefficient of any odd power, including , is therefore zero. You do not need to expand anything once you see this.
WATCH OUT FOR
Expanding in place of picks up the odd term . Mixing up with picks up in the same way. Some students also report the coefficient () by mistake. The printed function is , which is even.
