Which of the following complex functions is/are analytic on the complex plane?
ANSWER
Only option (D), , is analytic on the complex plane.
Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)
Write and . If is differentiable at a point, the Cauchy-Riemann equations and must hold there (a necessary condition). If the first partial derivatives are continuous and satisfy these equations, is differentiable (the sufficient condition). A function is analytic on the plane if it is differentiable at every point.
(A) , so and . The first equation holds: . The second fails: but . Cauchy-Riemann fails at every point, so (A) is not analytic.
(B) , so and . The first equation holds: . The second fails: but . It fails at every point, so (B) is not analytic.
(C) is real-valued, so . Wherever is differentiable, Cauchy-Riemann would force and . But for , whenever . So Cauchy-Riemann fails at every point off the imaginary axis, and (C) is not analytic. (This is a general fact: a real-valued analytic function must be constant.)
(D) is a polynomial in . Every polynomial is differentiable everywhere, here with . As a check: and give and at every point, and these partial derivatives are continuous. So (D) is analytic on the whole plane (entire).
Only (D) is analytic.
KEY IDEA
A function built from alone, such as a polynomial in , is entire. Functions built from , or depend on as well as , and they fail the Cauchy-Riemann equations , . A non-constant real-valued function can never be analytic.
WATCH OUT FOR
Checking only the first Cauchy-Riemann equation. In (A) and (B), holds trivially, and a student who stops there wrongly marks them analytic. Another mistake is to accept because the exponential is entire: is analytic in , but is not an analytic function of , so the composition is not analytic either.
