Let be a complex variable and be its complex conjugate. The equation represents a
parabola
hyperbola
ellipse
circle
ANSWER
reduces to , a rectangular hyperbola, so the answer is (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)
Write and , then expand both squares: and .
Add them. The imaginary parts cancel, which is expected because is the conjugate of , so :
Set this equal to 2: .
Compare with the standard form . Here , so the curve is a rectangular hyperbola with vertices at and asymptotes .
So the equation represents a hyperbola, which is option (B).
KEY IDEA
Substitute and turn the complex equation into a real equation in and . A sum of conjugates is real: . Then read off the conic from its Cartesian form: is a hyperbola.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating as if it were . That gives and the wrong answer, circle (D). Another slip is to expand as , forgetting that . Squaring flips the sign of , and that sign is what makes the curve a hyperbola and not a circle or an ellipse.
