The complex functions and are both analytic in a given domain. Choose the correct option(s) from the following.
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
The complex functions and are both analytic in a given domain. Choose the correct option(s) from the following.
ANSWER
Options (A) and (C) are correct. Analyticity of both and forces and , so .
Official answer: A, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)
Since is analytic, it satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann equations: and .
Write : its real part is and its imaginary part is . Since is analytic too, its Cauchy-Riemann equations give and .
Combine the first equations: and give , so This is option (A), so (A) is true.
Combine the second equations: and give , so Both sides are zero. Option (B) says they are , so (B) is false.
For an analytic function, . Here at every point of the domain, so (C) is true and (D) is false. (All four first partial derivatives of and vanish, so on a connected domain is a constant.)
Correct options: (A) and (C).
KEY IDEA
Write the Cauchy-Riemann equations for and for . Each pair of equations has the same left side and right sides of opposite sign, so every first partial derivative of and must be zero. That makes , and on a connected domain is constant.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using instead of as the imaginary part of in its Cauchy-Riemann equations. Doing that just repeats the equations for and gives no new information. Another trap is picking (B) because it looks like the standard CR equation . The equation does hold, but both sides equal zero, so the "" part of (B) is false.
