Consider the following equation in a 2-D real-space.

Which of the following statement(s) is/are true.

  1. (A)

When , the area enclosed by the curve is .

  2. (B)

When tends to , the area enclosed by the curve tends to 4.

  3. (C)

When tends to , the area enclosed by the curve is 1.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A), (B) and (D) are true. The area is at (circle), 2 at (diamond) and tends to 4 as (square). As the area tends to 0, not 1, so (C) is false.

Official answer: A, B, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Region and symmetry. The curve bounds the region . It is unchanged by and , so its area is four times the first-quadrant area: Also, every point of has and , so and . Every therefore sits inside the square , and .

  2. (A) : is the unit circle, so . True.

  3. (D) : is a square turned through , with vertices and . Both diagonals have length 2, so . (Check: the first-quadrant part is the triangle with area , and .) True.

  4. (B) : if and , then . So the square of side lies inside , and by Step 1, lies inside the square of side 2: As , , so . Geometrically, , so the curve approaches the square with sides and . True.

  5. (C) : take any point with and . As , and , so and the point eventually falls outside the curve. Only the two axis segments ( and ) stay inside for every . The region shrinks onto a '+' shape, which has zero area, so the area tends to , not 1. (Step 7 makes this exact.) False.

  6. Closed form, as a check. In the integral of Step 1, substitute , so and : Since , This gives and . As , , which agrees with (A), (D) and (B).

  7. The limit from the closed form. Let , so . Since , The last step uses on . The bound , so . For example, and . The area goes to 0, never to 1, so (C) is false.

  8. The correct options are (A), (B), (D).

KEY IDEA

is the unit ball of the -norm. At it is a diamond (area 2), at the unit circle (area ), and as it fills out the square (area 4). As it collapses onto the two axes (area 0). Every one of these regions lies inside the square , and in general .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is taking the limit to be a unit square or some other finite shape and ticking (C). For any point off the axes, as , so the sum tends to 2 and the point drops out: the region shrinks to zero area. At , students also often forget the factor of 4 from symmetry and give , or take the diamond's side as 1 instead of and get an area of 1.
