Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

x-y axes with origin O. The shaded region R is a square (a diamond tilted 45 degrees) with vertices O(0,0), (1,1), (0,2) and (-1,1). Its four sides are labelled: lower right edge y = x (from O to (1,1)), upper right edge y = -x+2 (from (1,1) to (0,2)), upper left edge y = x+2 (from (-1,1) to (0,2)), lower left edge y = -x (from O to (-1,1)). The y-axis runs through the middle of R from O up to 2, with tick marks at y = 1 and y = 2; the label R sits in the right half of the square.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. From the figure, is the square with vertices , , and . The lines and meet at , and and meet at . The -axis splits into two mirror-image halves.

  2. Symmetry check: replacing by turns into and into , so is symmetric about the -axis. The integrand is odd in , since . The two halves therefore cancel and the integral is . Both halves are worked out below as a check.

  3. Right half (, ):

  4. Left half (, ):

  5. Adding the halves: , so .

KEY IDEA

If a region is symmetric about the -axis and the integrand is odd in (), the double integral is zero. The contribution from each point cancels the one from . Always check for symmetry before integrating.

WATCH OUT FOR

A common error is integrating over the right half only (where and the integrand is positive), which gives and rounds to by luck, without seeing why the full answer is exactly zero. Another is taking from to across the whole square, which mixes up the edges that bound each half. The upper and lower boundaries change at , so the integral has to be split there.
