Figure description

Four sketches, each plotting E_R (vertical axis) against R (horizontal axis), origin marked 0, with a dashed vertical line at R = a. Fig. (i): E_R rises linearly from 0 at R = 0 to a positive peak ρ_0 a/ ε_0 at R = a (dashed horizontal line to the E_R axis marks this value). For R > a it decays along a curve towards zero. Fig. (ii): same shape as Fig. (i), but the positive peak at R = a is labelled 2 ρ_0 a/ ε_0 and the linear rise is steeper. Fig. (iii): E_R falls linearly from 0 at R = 0 to a negative minimum - ρ_0 a/ ε_0 at R = a (dashed horizontal line marks this value). For R > a it rises along a curve back towards zero from below. Fig. (iv): same shape as Fig. (iii), but the negative minimum at R = a is labelled -2 ρ_0 a/ ε_0 and the linear fall is steeper.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(C) Fig. (iii): inside the cloud, reaching at , and outside it.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Symmetry. The charge is spherically symmetric, so and depends only on . Gauss's law over a concentric sphere of radius gives , with .

  2. Inside (). The enclosed charge is , so This is a straight line through the origin with a negative slope.

  3. At the surface (). . This is the most negative value the field reaches.

  4. Outside (). Now the sphere encloses all the charge, , so This is negative and rises towards zero as . At it equals , the same as the inside value, so the field is continuous at the surface.

  5. Pick the figure. The field is negative everywhere. It falls linearly to at , then returns to zero as . That is Fig. (iii), option (C). Figs. (i) and (ii) have the wrong sign: they would describe positive charge. Fig. (iv) has the right shape but twice the magnitude, which would need .

KEY IDEA

For a uniformly charged sphere, Gauss's law gives inside, which grows linearly with , and outside. The two agree at . With the factor 3 cancels, leaving . The negative sign means the field points inward, towards the electron cloud.

WATCH OUT FOR

Dropping the minus sign because the cloud is described by positive constants and . That gives the mirror-image graph, Fig. (i). A second slip is to forget the in the sphere's volume, or to use the cylinder result . Either one gives the wrong peak magnitude and can pull you towards Fig. (iv).
