Figure from the GATE 2025 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Cartesian axes: x (m) horizontal, pointing right; y (m) vertical, pointing up; origin at the centre. A hatched square sheet is centred on the origin, with corners labelled (−2, 2) top-left, (2, 2) top-right, (−2, −2) bottom-left and (2, −2) bottom-right. So the sheet covers −2 ≤ x ≤ 2 and −2 ≤ y ≤ 2 (4 m × 4 m) and lies in the z = 0 plane.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The total charge on the sheet is , which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Total charge on a surface. Integrate the surface charge density over the area: . The sheet lies in the - plane, so .

  2. Limits from the figure. The corners are at , so the sheet covers and (in m). That is a square, as the question says.

  3. Separate the integral. does not depend on , so the double integral splits into a product:

  4. Integrate using symmetry. is an even function, so . The -integral is just the width of the sheet: .

  5. Combine. With in : This is already an integer, and it is option (C).

KEY IDEA

Total charge is the surface integral of over the sheet. Here does not depend on , so the integral splits into (width in ) . Because is even, is twice the integral from to .

WATCH OUT FOR

Dropping the modulus and integrating from to gives . The absolute value makes the density positive on both halves, so the two halves add instead of cancelling. The other common slip is to treat as uniform, using its edge value times the area , which gives . The density rises linearly from zero at , so its average over the sheet is only .
