Among the given options, the simplified form of the Boolean function is
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
Among the given options, the simplified form of the Boolean function is
ANSWER
, which is option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)
Notation: is the complement of , and a dot (or two letters side by side) means AND. Start with the first bracket. The redundancy theorem with , gives
Expand the second term with the distributive law:
Complement law: . So the second term is just .
Put the two parts together:
Apply the redundancy theorem again, with and : . So .
Apply it once more, with and : . Therefore
Check: is 0 only when , and . With the last term is just , so as well. is therefore 0 only at , which is exactly . The other options fail at a single input. At we have , but (B) . At we have , but (C) and (D) . The answer is option (A).
KEY IDEA
Use the redundancy theorem again and again. It first turns into . After removes one product, it takes down to . A quick way to check: is 0 only when every input is 0, and that function is the OR of all the inputs.
WATCH OUT FOR
Losing the leading partway through. Redundancy on alone correctly gives , which is option (C). But still has the term, and turns it into . Other mistakes are keeping as a real term instead of setting it to 0, or thinking the whole second product is absorbed just because it contains .
