Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two inputs, B (upper) and A (lower), enter from the left as horizontal lines. From left to right the circuit runs four horizontal rails, top to bottom: (1) B, the output of a NOT gate whose input is tapped from the B line; (2) B; (3) A, the output of a NOT gate whose input is tapped from the A line; (4) A. Two 2-input NOR gates sit below the rails. Left NOR gate: one input is tapped (dot) from the A rail and the other from the B rail, so its output is A+B. Right NOR gate: one input is tapped (dot) from the A rail and the other from the B rail, so its output is A+B. The outputs of both NOR gates feed a third 2-input NOR gate, whose output is F. Each gate is drawn as an OR shape with an output bubble, so all three are NOR gates.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Read the rails from top to bottom. The two inverters give on the top rail and on the third rail, and and run through unchanged on the second and fourth rails. Here means the complement of . A dot marks a connection. Where a vertical wire crosses a rail with no dot, the two are not connected.

  2. Left NOR gate. Its inputs are tapped (dots) from the rail and the rail. By De Morgan's theorem:

  3. Right NOR gate. Its inputs are tapped (dots) from the rail and the rail. By De Morgan's theorem:

  4. Output NOR gate, fed by and :

  5. Factor out and use the complement law :

  6. So , which is option (D). Check with : and , so . Check with : , so . Both agree.

KEY IDEA

A NOR gate fed with complemented inputs acts as an AND gate: . So the two first-level NOR gates produce the product terms and . The output NOR gives the complement of their sum. Since , the output does not depend on and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating a crossing wire as a connection. The vertical wires from the rail cross the , and rails with no dot, so they connect only to . If you read the right gate's inputs as and , you get , which is not one of the options. The other slip is dropping the output bubble on the last gate. That gives instead of .
