Simplified form of the Boolean function
is
(Complement is written with .)
ANSWER
(A): , which covers .
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)
Complement is written as throughout. The last two terms differ only in , so by adjacency (): .
Take out of the first two terms and use the redundancy rule (the form ): .
So . As a check, list the minterms of the original terms (bit order ): , , , . This gives .
Group the 1s on a K-map (rows , columns , both in Gray order ). The quad is a block where and , so it is . The four corner cells are where and , so they form . Together the two quads cover all eight 1s and nothing else.
Checking the other options: (B) misses and . (C) contains (), which is not in . (D) also contains . So option (A) is the answer.
KEY IDEA
Expand the function to its minterm list, in the order , and group the 1s on a 4-variable K-map. The quad and the four-corner quad cover every 1. Algebraically, splits into and . The first part is absorbed by , and the second combines with to give .
WATCH OUT FOR
The usual mistake is to miss that the four corner cells are adjacent (the K-map wraps around both ways), so never gets formed. Another is to keep as a prime implicant and pick (B). But (B) leaves out and , which come from . Always check a chosen option against the full minterm list.
