For the Boolean function
the essential prime implicants are ________.
ANSWER
The essential prime implicants are and , which is option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)
Complement is written with throughout. Put the minterms on a 4-variable K-map, with rows and columns , both in Gray order 00, 01, 11, 10. Row has . Row has . Row has , which is the whole row. Row has . The 0 cells are .
List every prime implicant, meaning every largest group of adjacent 1s. They are (the four corners), , and . None of these fits inside a group of 8: needs and needs , and all four are 0. Every 1 lies in at least one of the four quads, so there are no other prime implicants.
Essential-PI test: a prime implicant is essential if it is the only one that covers some minterm. is adjacent to . Since and are 0, any group containing must lie inside . The same holds for , whose 0 neighbours are . So and are covered only by , which makes essential.
is adjacent to , and are 0. is adjacent to , and are 0. So any group containing or must lie inside . They are covered only by , which makes essential.
Check the rest. and are each covered by both and . and are covered by as well as . and are covered by as well as . No minterm is covered by alone, so is not essential, and for the same reason neither is .
The essential prime implicants are therefore and . Together they cover every minterm except and . To finish the minimum SOP you still need one of or , giving or . That third term is a selective choice, not an essential one. This matches option (A).
KEY IDEA
A prime implicant is essential only if some minterm is covered by that prime implicant and by no other. Here can only be grouped into the corner quad , and only into . The remaining minterms are covered equally well by or by , so neither of those is essential.
WATCH OUT FOR
Picking (D) because appears in a minimum SOP. is needed only to cover and , and covers them just as well, so is a selective prime implicant, not an essential one. A second mistake is to miss altogether: with only three prime implicants in view, looks like the sole cover of and wrongly seems essential.
