GATE 2020 · EEQ.24 · 1 mark · NAT

Consider a negative unity feedback system with forward path transfer function , where are positive real numbers. For a Nyquist path enclosing the entire imaginary axis and right half of the -plane in the clockwise direction, the Nyquist plot of , encircles the origin of -plane once in the clockwise direction and never passes through this origin for a certain value of . Then, the number of poles of lying in the open right half of the -plane is ________.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The closed-loop system has 2 poles in the open right half of the -plane.

  1. Open-loop poles are , and . Since , exactly one of them () lies in the open right half-plane, and none lies on the imaginary axis. So .

  2. Write At any root of the denominator the numerator equals , so nothing cancels: has exactly the same poles as , and therefore also in the RHP.

  3. The zeros of are the roots of , which is the closed-loop characteristic equation. Let be the number of these zeros inside the Nyquist contour. Because the plot never passes through the origin, for every , so no zero sits on the imaginary axis and counts zeros in the open RHP only.

  4. Nyquist criterion (argument principle): with the contour traversed clockwise and clockwise encirclements of the origin of the -plane counted as positive,

  5. One clockwise encirclement is given, so :

  6. The closed-loop transfer function is Its numerator is the non-zero constant , so no pole-zero cancellation is possible. Its poles are exactly the zeros of , and 2 of them lie in the open right half of the -plane.

KEY IDEA

The plot is of , so encirclements are counted around the origin, not around . With a clockwise contour, : the open-loop pole at gives , the one clockwise encirclement gives , so . The zeros of are the closed-loop poles, and here they cannot cancel against anything because the numerator of is just the constant .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using , which counts anticlockwise encirclements as positive, gives and wrongly calls the system stable. The other common slip is to treat as having no RHP poles and write , missing the pole at that comes from the factor .
