Figure from the GATE 2025 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Unity negative feedback loop. 'Input' enters a summing junction at its + input. The summer output feeds a single forward block labelled G(s), whose output is labelled 'Output'. A take-off point after G(s) feeds the output straight back (gain 1, no block) to the bottom input of the summing junction, which is marked with a minus sign.

  1. (A)

The system stability cannot be ascertained.

  2. (B)

    The system is marginally stable.

  3. (C)

    The system is stable.

  4. (D)

    The system is unstable.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The closed-loop system is unstable, option (D). is stable, so . One net encirclement of then means exactly one closed-loop pole in the right half-plane. The zero at does not enter the count.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Open-loop RHP poles. is strictly stable, so all its poles lie in the open left half-plane and none lie on the axis. The poles of are the poles of , so the number of open-loop RHP poles is

  2. The zero at does not enter the count. puts a zero of in the RHP. The Nyquist criterion counts the zeros of . For this unity negative feedback loop those zeros are the closed-loop poles, because . A zero of is neither a pole nor a zero of , so it plays no part in the count.

  3. Argument principle, with no sign convention assumed. Let the Nyquist contour enclose the whole RHP. As goes once round it, traces the Nyquist plot. The net number of times that plot encircles , counted in the same sense as the contour is traversed, is Here is the number of zeros of in the RHP, which is the number of closed-loop RHP poles.

  4. What implies. With we get . So the plot of a stable can encircle only in the direction the contour is traversed, and every net encirclement is one closed-loop RHP pole. Increasing (clockwise contour) gives clockwise encirclements. Decreasing (anticlockwise contour) gives anticlockwise ones. The question does not say which way the plot is traced, and its 'anticlockwise' fits the second reading. Either way, the number of encirclements is what decides stability.

  5. Put in the data. The plot encircles exactly once, so The closed loop has one pole in the right half-plane.

  6. Ruling out marginal stability. The point is encircled, so it does not lie on the plot. That means for every , so no closed-loop pole sits on the axis. The system is therefore not marginally stable. It has one RHP pole, so it is unstable: option (D).

  7. A concrete check. Take . It is strictly stable and its numerator is . The closed-loop characteristic equation is so one root, , is in the RHP and . A numerical trace of this plot, with to the left of , gives exactly one encirclement of . It is clockwise for from to and anticlockwise when traced the other way. This is the situation the question describes, and the loop is unstable.

KEY IDEA

When the open loop is stable (), the closed loop is stable if and only if the Nyquist plot does not encircle . The number of net encirclements equals the number of closed-loop RHP poles, . The direction of an encirclement only shows which way the contour was traversed. RHP zeros of , such as the one at , are not counted in or .

WATCH OUT FOR

A common error is to fix a clockwise contour, put the anticlockwise encirclement into as , get , and then call the data contradictory and pick (A). The question never says which way the plot is traced, and 'anticlockwise' is only meaningful relative to that direction. What does not depend on the direction is that is encircled once, and with that means one RHP closed-loop pole. Two other slips: counting the zero at as an open-loop RHP pole, and choosing 'marginally stable' even though the plot does not pass through .
