See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The Nyquist plot of makes 0 clockwise encirclements of .

Official answer: 0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Loop transfer function:

  2. Open-loop poles: . Both poles are in the right half-plane, so . No poles lie on the axis, so the Nyquist contour needs no indentations.

  3. Put : The numerator and denominator are complex conjugates of each other, so they have equal magnitude.

  4. Therefore for every . If is the angle of the numerator , then . As goes from to , rises from to (it passes at , where ), so the plot goes once round the circle. On the infinite arc, . The whole Nyquist plot therefore lies on the circle of radius centred at the origin.

  5. The point is at distance from the origin. It is outside that circle, so the plot never encircles it: .

  6. Cross-check with the Nyquist criterion (clockwise encirclements). The characteristic equation gives . The roots are . Their real part is , so both are in the RHP and . Then , which agrees. (The closed loop is unstable, but that does not change the encirclement count.)

KEY IDEA

The zeros are the mirror images of the poles across the axis, so is all-pass: at every frequency. Multiplying by puts the entire Nyquist plot on a circle of radius . The point lies outside that circle and cannot be encircled.

WATCH OUT FOR

Students see two open-loop RHP poles () and write or , as if a stable closed loop were being assumed, or they take the count from alone. The encirclement count depends only on where the plot goes, and this plot stays on a circle of radius , so . That gives : the closed loop is unstable, but the answer asked for is still . A second slip is writing the angle as with the principal-value arctangent. That formula goes wrong for because it drops the quadrant.
