Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Signal flow graph with four nodes in a row: input node X(s), node A, node B and output node Y(s). A branch of gain G_1(s) runs from X(s) to A. A straight branch of gain G_2(s) runs from A to B. An upper semicircular arc of gain G_3(s) runs from A to B (arrowhead pointing down into B). A lower semicircular arc of gain -1 runs from B back to A (arrowhead pointing up into A). A branch of gain 2 runs from B to Y(s).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Read the branch directions first. Call the two unlabelled middle nodes (after ) and (before the gain ). and both run forward from to . The arrowhead on the arc points up into , so it is a feedback branch from to .

  2. Forward paths from to : and .

  3. Individual loops (each goes forward and closes through the branch): and .

  4. Non-touching loops: none, because and share nodes and .

  5. Graph determinant: .

  6. Both forward paths pass through and , so each touches both loops: .

  7. Mason's gain formula: This is option (A).

  8. Quick check by block reduction: and are in parallel between and , giving , and the branch closes a unity negative feedback loop around it, giving . Multiplying by in front and behind gives the same result.

KEY IDEA

and are two parallel forward branches from the same node to the same node, and the branch feeds back around both of them. That makes two forward paths and two loops that touch each other and both paths. Mason's formula, or block reduction (parallel, then unity negative feedback), gives .

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading the arc as a third forward branch from to . It looks symmetric with the arc, but its arrowhead points into the left node, so it is feedback. Treating it as forward removes both loops and gives the wrong result . A second slip is to count only the loop and forget that also closes a loop through the branch, which gives a denominator of .
