GATE 2023 · EEQ.14 · 1 mark · MCQ

Consider a unity-gain negative feedback system consisting of the plant (given below) and a proportional-integral controller. Let the proportional gain and integral gain be 3 and 1, respectively. For a unit step reference input, the final values of the controller output and the plant output, respectively, are

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The controller output settles at and the plant output at , so the answer is (D) .

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. PI controller: , so the loop gain is .

  2. Check stability before using the final value theorem. The characteristic equation gives Both closed-loop poles are at , so the closed loop is stable even though the plant has a pole at .

  3. Plant output: . With , the final value theorem gives This fits the loop being type 1 (the integrator in ), which gives zero steady-state error to a step.

  4. Controller output: , where . So

  5. Final value theorem, valid because every pole of is at :

  6. Consistency check at steady state: the plant DC gain is , so . This agrees with step 3.

  7. The controller output settles at and the plant output at , in the order the question asks for (controller first). The answer is option (D).

KEY IDEA

The PI controller stabilises the loop (closed-loop poles at , twice), and its integrator forces the steady-state error to zero, so . At steady state the plant still needs an input: . Zero error does not mean zero controller output, because the integrator holds whatever value the plant needs.

WATCH OUT FOR

Three common traps. (1) Seeing the unstable plant pole or the integrator and choosing without checking the closed-loop characteristic equation, which is and stable. (2) Reasoning that the controller output must be 0 because the error is 0. The integral term keeps a nonzero value, here , because is negative. (3) Getting the right values and then reversing the order: the question asks for the controller output first, which gives (D), not (C).
