Figure description

Block diagram: input R(s) enters a summing junction with sign + on the reference input and sign - on the feedback input. The junction output feeds block C(s), which feeds block G(s) in cascade; the output of G(s) is Y(s). Y(s) is taken off and fed back directly (unity gain, no block) to the - input of the summing junction. So it is a unity negative feedback system with forward path C(s)G(s).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(with , and the third closed-loop pole at ). Option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Unity negative feedback, so the characteristic equation is :

  2. The closed loop is third order, but the question fixes only two poles. The desired pair gives the quadratic factor .

  3. Let the third closed-loop pole be at . The desired characteristic polynomial is then

  4. Match the coefficients: , so the third pole is at . (Equivalently, the three poles must sum to , and gives .)

  5. Match the coefficients: .

  6. Match the constant terms: .

  7. Check: , which equals . Both and are positive, as the question requires, and all three closed-loop poles ( and ) lie in the left half-plane. So .

KEY IDEA

The loop gives a third-order characteristic equation , so there are three closed-loop poles. Two of them are specified. Add an unknown third pole and match coefficients. The coefficient contains no or , so it fixes the third pole first: the poles must sum to , which puts it at . The other two coefficients then give and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the closed loop as second order, so that is matched straight against a truncated characteristic equation and the third pole is dropped. A second trap is assuming the third closed-loop pole stays at the compensator pole . Closing the loop moves it: the pole sum forces it to . Assuming gives and an coefficient of , which is inconsistent. Some also try pole-zero cancellation (), which is not an option and does not place the poles at .
