and as defined below, are the phase modulated and the frequency modulated waveforms, respectively, corresponding to the message signal shown in the figure.

and

where is the phase deviation constant in radians/volt and is the frequency deviation constant in radians/second/volt. If the highest instantaneous frequencies of and are same, then the value of the ratio is ______ seconds.

GATE 2020 EC question 47: Plot of m(t) in volts versus t in seconds.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of m(t) in volts versus t in seconds. m(t) = 0 for t < 1 s; rises linearly from 0 V at t = 1 s to 10 V at t = 3 s; stays constant at 10 V from t = 3 s to t = 6 s (dashed guide lines at t = 3 and t = 6, and a dashed horizontal line at 10 V); falls linearly from 10 V at t = 6 s to 0 V at t = 7 s; 0 afterwards. Axes labelled V and t (sec).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

seconds.

  1. Read from the figure: it is for , rises linearly from to over , stays at for , falls linearly from to over , and is afterwards.

  2. Slopes of : rising edge ; flat part ; falling edge . The maximum value of is .

  3. The instantaneous angular frequency is the time derivative of the total phase. For PM the phase is , so

  4. For FM the phase is , and the derivative of the integral is , so

  5. Taking and (they are deviation constants), the PM frequency is highest where is largest, which is the rising edge: The falling edge with only lowers the frequency.

  6. The FM frequency is highest where is largest, which is :

  7. Equate the two highest frequencies: , so The unit is consistent: is in rad/V and in rad/s/V, so the ratio is in seconds.

KEY IDEA

Instantaneous frequency is the derivative of the phase. For PM it follows the slope , so its peak is on the steepest rising edge. For FM it follows itself, so its peak is at the maximum of .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the maximum value of for the PM case, or the slope for the FM case, which swaps the roles. Another slip is picking the steepest slope, which is on the falling edge and lowers the PM frequency. The highest PM frequency uses the rising edge.
