Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Block diagram: input x(t) goes into a multiplier (circle with a cross). A second input enters the multiplier from below, labelled cos(2π(f_c + 40)t). The multiplier output feeds a box labelled 'Ideal LPF with cut-off 510 Hz'. Inside the box is a plot of the frequency response, with the f (Hz) axis, a rectangular passband of height 1 from -510 to 510, and ticks at -510 and 510. The box output is y(t).

  1. (A)

    cos(460πt).

  2. (B)

    cos(920πt).

  3. (C)

    cos(1000πt).

  4. (D)

    cos(540πt).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The demodulator output is , option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. The demodulator multiplies by a local carrier that is 40 Hz away from :

  2. Apply to the two carrier factors:

  3. The second term is centred near . It lies far above the 510 Hz cut-off of the ideal LPF, so it is removed, together with its sidebands at about . After the filter, only the low-frequency part of the product remains:

  4. Expand the product of cosines:

  5. The two terms have frequencies and .

  6. The LPF has unit gain for and zero gain beyond. The 460 Hz term lies inside the passband and is passed. The 540 Hz term lies outside and is blocked.

  7. Hence , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

The local carrier is 40 Hz off, so the product gives , which splits the 500 Hz message into 460 Hz and 540 Hz. The 510 Hz LPF keeps only the 460 Hz term.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the 40 Hz offset as harmless and answering (option C). Another slip is to keep both 460 Hz and 540 Hz terms, or to pass the 540 Hz term because it is close to the cut-off. It is above 510 Hz, so it is blocked.
